Thessaloniki the second largest city of Greece next to Athens, is located in the region of Macedonia and curves round the Thermaic Gulf for several kilometers.
Thessaloniki was founded by King Kassander the Macedon in 315-6 BC and was named after Alexander the Great’s sister.
Although the city, by greek standards, is rather new, has played a very important role in almost every historical period, especially the Byzantine.
Today Thessaloniki is a vibrant modern city of more than 1.000.000 inhabitants that can be a tempting destination as a city break.
2012 is a special year for Thessaloniki. In 1912 after more than 450 years of turkish occupation the city was liberated by the greek army and became a part of Greece. To celebrate the 100 years of incorporation to the Greek State the city organizes several events. The festivities have not started yet. So stay tuned!
Moreover Thessaloniki was awarded the title of European Youth Capital for 2014. The iniciative will highlight the ideas, wishes and dream of youth.
